After listening to the CripTONIGHT presentation I have realized that people with disabilities face a numerous number of challenges and barriers in their everyday lives. I have learned that people with disabilities tend to get healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis of the person rather than the physical disability that they have. Also, transportation is a very big barrier for people with disabilities because some individuals require a vehicle that has to be able to transport a certain item for the person and if a transportation service such as a train does not have this ability, then these individual’s face major challenges in order for them to go to doctor’s appointments or whatever it may be. As I have mentioned before healthcare providers tend to care for the patient’s physical diagnoses rather than the disability that they have because of the diagnosis. This may be present because the providers feel that they do not need to focus on the patient’s disability, and they may refer the patient to another outpatient clinic or healthcare service member to focus on the patients disability.
Healthcare providers are also faced with the challenge of what they feel may be better off for the patient rather than what the patient thinks is best for them. In certain scenarios healthcare provider may promote or deny certain health promoting interventions because of insurance issues even though it may be the best thing for the patient. One major thing that I had learned from this presentation about patients who experience disability’s is that I have I never considered before is that there is conflict between healthcare providers for a patient. For example, if a patient has numerous healthcare providers, there may be constant miscommunication on what each provider tells the patient on what to do, to better their care. I have not realized this before because I would assume that healthcare professionals would communicate with each other about working with the same patient to provide the best quality care possible.
