Career Devlopment Post

After completion of the film “Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now”, I noticed many skills that the nurses exemplified in this film that I could use myself to better my own practice.  I noticed that nurses tend to care for the whole family rather than just the patient. This is an important practice because in some cases the family will be present with the patient, and it is important for the nurse to include the whole family in the care. This is something I feel that I need to work on and practice with because ultimately it will provide better patient outcomes. The patient population that was featured in this film that I have not yet served was the pregnancy population. Certain barriers to care for this patient population access to care, many patients that live in remote places may not have access to care for during their pregnancy. Also, money is a barrier of care and whether someone can afford all the costs that come with pregnancy. It is important as a nurse that we advocate for these patients and connect them with social serves so they can be lead in the right direction on how to combat these barriers. Cultural humility helped this nurse care for diverse populations through the relationship that he builds with his patients when he shows them pictures of their babies in utero, and he loves the bond that is created between him and his patients.

The way I plan to prepare for the interview for a position that I want that will set me apart from other applicants is to try to gain as much information about that unit that I possibly can. It is important when interviewing for a unit that you have some background in so that way it will set you apart from other applicants that may not know what goes on in that unit. Also working in a unit that you apply for will give you a great advantage on other applicants in the interview process as you are already familiar with the unit and how it is run. During my interview I will describe my strengths in a way that can be supported and used in my own practice. For example, I believe myself to be great at communication and I can describe this as a skill and technique that I can use with both patients and fellow nurses so we can come up with the best possible care plan for each patient. I will also have supportive evidence of my strengths written in my resume to provide additional information. Using the same example of being great at communication, my resume may include that I was a Captain of both my high school and college football team which can help support this skill of mine. I will describe my weaknesses to the employer as areas in need of improvement for me to better my practice as a nurse. I will explain my weaknesses but also provide ways that I plan on improving them, so the employers know that I am eager to better myself and the care I provide for future patients.
