In completion of my community partnership with PRCC my knowledge of the population has increased drastically. Going into this assignment I did not have a lot of experience about the population that is involved with PRCC. Now I have learned that the population consists of all people experiencing Alcohol and Opiate recovery. I also thought that PRCC was a hospital or clinic setting but it is more of a recovery facility that acts as a safe space for everyone included. The most meaningful aspect of my volunteer experience had to have been the pure joy of every member and volunteer coming into the facility. PRCC is such a warm and welcoming environment to everyone which enhances people’s recovery without any judgement. Most of the volunteers are recovering as well so they all comfort each other and support one’s recovery. The learning goals that I had set for myself were learning the recovery process of each individual and learning the communication techniques that the staff and other volunteers use to promote recovery. I did meet these goals I was able to learn that each person recovers in different ways and PRCC offers many services to support each person’s recovery path. I had also learned that volunteers and other members of PRCC use various therapeutic communication techniques such as open-ended questions and silence when comforting others within the community.
